How News Networks Report the News Differently
This weeks article looks at how news networks differ from one another on what they talk about most. This article puts MSNBC, FOX, and CNN into a triangle, putting each network on one point and then looking at certain words to see how the reporting differs.
The first topic it looks at is the Russia investigation that began in 2016 and went on for years. When looking at the triangle, it shows that the bulk of coverage on this topic came from MSNBC as well as CNN. When looking at the word 'The Clinton's' the triangle shows that this word was heavily used on Fox news but hardly any others. The last phrase I will include in this post is the term 'NFL protests.' The triangle shows that the term 'NFL protests' was more heavily reported on by Fox news and some on CNN.
This article is great in that it gives a basic look at how news networks differ on what they report. Whether this is because of ideology or political agenda, is uncertain with just this article, however it is a good start. This does show however that an individual that only gets their news from one network will most likely not get all of the news as some networks only focus on certain stories and not others and vice versa.
This article also has a feature that allows the reader to type in any word they want and see how it looks on the triangle, which I highly encourage to try.
Next week I will look more into social media apps and their affect on our political sphere.

This is a very interesting topic. I think the more light we shed on it the better. We know that there has definitely been a presence of fake news in many outlets in the past few years. It is generally masked by ''ideologies''. Do you think there should be a certain penalty for sharing news that has been proven to be false?
ReplyDeleteI do think there should be a certain penalty, specially if their lies and have a major repercussion. We saw this at the beginning of the pandemic and we also saw it during the election. Fox News downplayed the virus at the beginning which spread the belief among its viewers that it was just a simple flu and now 500,000 people have died because of the virus and people not taking basic precautions. During the election, the one lie that resonated was that there was election fraud and that thousands and thousands of dead people voted and these kinds of lies lead to the capitol riots. There should be some accountability for those spreading lies like this.
DeleteIt is definitely not very hard to figure out how each network uses each keyword and the reporting around those words but it is very interesting to see the comparison side by side!
ReplyDeleteHey Dylan this was a great post! Though this article just brushes over the subject it is such an important one. Our country seemingly becomes more divided by ideological lines by the day. Basic values and moral principles are no longer shared by the nation as a whole but it seems as though each party has their own set of guiding principles and values. And I know they have always had differences in opinions and policy but there was always a shared respect or foundation from which each party stood on and this was what allowed sound compromise. I'm worried what the future holds for this country because it is hard to find a compromise when the two parties view the country they are "compromising' for in two distinctly different ways. I do believe media has played a major factor in this but I believe we as a people are the ones to fault. The news only prospers and succeeds as we allow it too and though we complain about the partisan nature of It we continue to consume it. The American people need some self accountability if we hope to have a brighter future than our present indicates.
ReplyDeleteHearing the different parties play on how they feel current events effect certain groups is interesting. I wish we could all be on the same page of just making America better than it was the day before not trying to be the most powerful or elite country because that should mot matter. Having all these conflicting opinions does nothing but confuse the Americans that are not in the loop with politics.
