Social Media and Political Campaigns

Image
This weeks article goes over how social media has effected the way political campaigns are approached and handled in a digital society. The article goes on to lists how social media has changed political campaigns which are: increased participation in the process, increased voter turnout, gave resurgence to issue voters, and more. It is no question that with the ever growing popularity of social media that political processes would be effected. It is now impossible to run for a seat in government (especially higher level) and not be talked about on social media. It is increasingly harder for politicians to stay out of the public eye compared to before the rise of social media.  It is also true that social media has created increased turnout as well as registration. This is one impact of social media on politics that is extremely positive as we need more people going out and voting and being active in our countries political sphere. The resurgence of issue voters can be...

How News Networks Report the News Differently

Image
This weeks article looks at how news networks differ from one another on what they talk about most. This article puts MSNBC, FOX, and CNN into a triangle, putting each network on one point and then looking at certain words to see how the reporting differs.  The first topic it looks at is the Russia investigation that began in 2016 and went on for years. When looking at the triangle, it shows that the bulk of coverage on this topic came from MSNBC as well as CNN. When looking at the word 'The Clinton's' the triangle shows that this word was heavily used on Fox news but hardly any others. The last phrase I will include in this post is the term 'NFL protests.' The triangle shows that the term 'NFL protests' was more heavily reported on by Fox news and some on CNN.  This article is great in that it gives a basic look at how news networks differ on what they report. Whether this is because of ideology or political agenda, is uncertain with just this article, ho...

The Split in Major News Network Viewership and Ideology

Image
This week I wanted to look into the differences of major news networks in terms of who views them. This weeks article "Americans are divided by party in the sources they turn to for political news", points at the viewership of multiple major news networks and how they differ from one another. The article states that 60% of individuals that identify themselves as Republicans got their political news from Fox news and few others. When looking at more left leaning individuals, 53% got their news from CNN. This article also points out that individuals that identify with the Democratic party seem to get news from not just CNN but also NBC (40%), ABC (37%) as well as CBS (33%). This was a major difference to their Republican counter parts, as the data showed that most Republicans got their news mostly from just Fox. However, the article did state that 24% of Republicans got political news from CNN and 23% of Democrats got political news from Fox. This can cause major issues, as ...

Covid 19 and Mass Media News Sources

Image
Covid-19 has made a great impact not only in the United States but around the world. It has been over a year now since the pandemic began and we were all locked in our houses 7 days out of the week. Now, more and more news arises that only seems to make people feel worse about the situation. This includes the news of the more contagious strain of Covid-19 that has begun to make its way across the United States and many others that seem to be coming out daily. Even with the monumental impact that the corona virus has caused this country, many Americans seem to feel lost about what is going on and what to believe when new corona virus information becomes available. Since the pandemic began, there has been a massive amount of back and forth between individuals about what is going on in our country when it comes to Covid-19. I was curious as to why it seemed that so many people had such differing opinions about the Covid-19 crisis. While searching, I found an article posted by CIDRAP...
