The Split in Major News Network Viewership and Ideology
This week I wanted to look into the differences of major news networks in terms of who views them. This weeks article "Americans are divided by party in the sources they turn to for political news", points at the viewership of multiple major news networks and how they differ from one another. The article states that 60% of individuals that identify themselves as Republicans got their political news from Fox news and few others. When looking at more left leaning individuals, 53% got their news from CNN. This article also points out that individuals that identify with the Democratic party seem to get news from not just CNN but also NBC (40%), ABC (37%) as well as CBS (33%). This was a major difference to their Republican counter parts, as the data showed that most Republicans got their news mostly from just Fox. However, the article did state that 24% of Republicans got political news from CNN and 23% of Democrats got political news from Fox.
This can cause major issues, as individuals do not seem as willing to get news from a differing news source that has a different view on the political issues that are facing our country. Both parties supporters only trusting news from a source that is known to agree with their ideology can be very dangerous and many individuals will lose the ability to see the issue from both viewpoints. Essentially, these individuals get themselves stuck down the rabbit hole, in which it is very hard to get out of. In order for our country to lessen this political divide, it is important that individuals are willing to get their political news from multiple differing news sources in terms of ideologies. This can help the average citizen to get a much tighter grasp on what it truly going on in our country's political sphere.

ReplyDeleteHey Dylan this was a great post! I think this Is if not the greatest one of the greatest issues facing our country today. Like you said many American's are not eager to watch news from both sides or hear the oppositions opinion. Many people (from both sides) think their views and opinions are the only ones that are correct and that is in such opposition to the ideals and values America was forged by. Our founders intended for the Federal government to run slow and they wanted the policy making process to be difficult because they understood the danger in that mindset and the beauty in the diversity of opinions. I think both the partisan media companies and average American needs to step up to the plate and strive for compromise or at least respect for one another's positions. This growing partisanship is starting to truly destroy America because we are all straying away from the values that brought us together. Once those are lost then respect and decency for opposition will be gone and it will lead to scary times. I hope we fight this mindset and rise above it because where it leads is nowhere good.
